The Last Month of School
It is so hard to believe that the year will soon be coming to an end! Please bare with us as we begin to do reading and math assessments. Below is a timeline of the assessments that we be giving so that you better understand what your child may be doing during parts of the day at school. Please keep in mind that we will still be instructing as regular, but will have a small amount of time on some of the days throughout the month that we will be assessing.
Our reading benchmark and fluency assessments will take from now until May 31st to complete. To best prepare for this assessment, continue having your child read nightly. Then discuss the story and have them complete one of the written responses that is in their homework folder.
We will be taking our State K-2 Summative Math Assessments during the last few days of May, beginning on May 24th. To best prepare for this assessment practice two and three digit addition and subtraction as well as place value (hundreds, tens, and ones).
Our Math Probes will take place the last week of May and first week of June. To best prepare for the probes, practice addition and subtraction facts with sums of 0-20, identifying the missing number in a set of numbers (ex: ____, 400, 401), and adding three diging numbers uding mental place value math (ex: 420 + 210 = ... students should do this quickly because they are just adding the ones, then tens, then hundreds).
What we are studying the last month of school:
Literacy: We will begin to learn note taking strategies in nonfiction texts while we compare the information learned in two texts on the same subject. We will be studying Sound and Matter while using our nonfiction strategies such as finding the author's purpose, main idea of each section of a nonfiction text, comparing information learned in several texts, and using text features to support comprehension. We will also read various fiction texts and poems. We want students to really focus on the author's purpose, main idea of a fictional story, and how problem and solution can affect the plot.
Math: In math we are finishing our study of Polygons and are moving into fractions and partitioning. We will then review all of the concepts we have learned this year, as well as introduce 3D shapes.
Science & Social Studies: We are going to be learning about Sound and Matter as we read nonfiction and fiction texts about the subjects. We have met all of our Social Studies standards for the year, but will continue to teach citizenship while we talk about sound (and how it affects those around us) and environmental literacy as we discuss the types of matter and how they appear in our environment.
